Yemen Union, EU Urge Release of Detained Journalists

(MENAFN) The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate and the European Union Delegation to Yemen call on Sunday for the release of nine journalists detained across the country, according to reports.

In statements marking World Press Freedom Day, both sides urge the immediate release of all detained journalists and demand stronger protections for press freedom in Yemen.

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate says journalists are facing severe and growing risks, including security threats, professional pressures, and economic hardship.

"The World Press Freedom Day comes this year as the press faces multifaceted challenges that strike at the very core of freedom of expression, placing journalists before unprecedented security risks and professional and economic pressures,” the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate said.

It also describes the working environment for journalists in Yemen as increasingly restrictive and unsafe, with reports of ongoing violations and harassment.

According to the union, eight journalists are detained by the Houthi movement, while another journalist is held by authorities in Aden.

The syndicate calls for an end to all violations against journalists, the release of all detainees, access to medical care, and an end to what it describes as politically motivated prosecutions and trials, as stated by reports.
